Cool Mod Font

Greetings, Typography folks, and thanks in advance for your help!

I was in a stationery store and spotted this wicked font they called "Mod." It looked like something that might have been used for a 1962 French New Wave movie poster -- it had longish serifs tapered into points. It looked sharp and slightly wacky at the same time. One imagines the New Wave movie advertised with it might be called "Parisian Scooter Angst" or somesuch. THAT font.

I'm on a Mac and I've got MS Word. I'm trying to create some personalized letterhead with this font, along with some cool old international pictographs from the "Handbook of Pictorial Symbols."

Where can I find the "Mod Font"? Seems like all the Mac font sites are "landmines" with tons of pop-ups and BS and you never get anywhere. What's the legit site for font downloads?

When you buy font libraries that have hundreds of fonts in them, and you don't want to have all of them activated at once, is there any other option - with Adobe CS3- than using a program like suitcase.
If I get suitcase, do I have to go through all the fonts individually and make my own sets, or are there predetermined sets or categories?
Anyone have any feedback on using Suitcase for Windows?
Thanks,
Jason

a backup resource for design tribes, like Typography

Since Tribe has been having difficulties I realized it would suck to lose good places like this and the people in them. So I got proactive and made a "backup" site called Tribe Refugees, which includes some discussion groups to parallel favorite tribes.

I've created an All Things Design Group as part of the larger Tribe Refugees network, to discuss everything from typography to web design to illustration.
You can use the site as a place to:
- chat during the donut times
- "backup" your Tribe contacts
- retreat to should Tribe just finally kick it

You need to first signup for the site (Tribe Refugees), then join the Group (All Things Design -- which is just a matter of clicking the Join Now link).
All Things Design: http://triberefugees.ning.com/group/allthingsdesign
Tribe Refugees: http://triberefugees.ning.com/

If you'd like more information about the Tribe Refugees site:
How to Join: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A25
About the Site: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A4901
Similarities between Ning and Tribe: http://triberefugees.ning.com/forum/topic/show?id=1400844%3ATopic%3A6716

Please note: the site/group was intended to support this tribe, NOT compete or detract from it. I just thought you guys might like to know about it so you can bookmark it, or signup to squat your space, or go ahead and participate. :)

In a 2004 interview Vier5 said, “you cannot work with modern pictures and at the same time use the typefaces of the last 50 years. The time for these typefaces is gone.”

On one level, I'm right there with them. I'm all for forging ahead...

But most of the fonts I use are time-tested and classic. Goudy Old Style is so beautiful and elegant, why use some wierd "modern" illegible font?

For the past year or so I’ve been on the search for a particular font type and having been unable to locate anything fitting the bill I’ve decided to take on the task of creating my own font. So far I’ve done a little research online, but have found no definitive explanation of the task. Anyone in here know of a good tutorial or have any tips to pass on? I know I need to create outlines for each of the characters using Illustrator, that is no problem, but detailed information of the process after that point would be very helpful!
Free expert font needed, if such a thing exists

Hello! I'm a bit of a linguaphile. Not only do languages and their structures interest me, but also their scripts and writing systems. Hence, I have an interest in typography as well, though I've not spent much time learning about it.

Now I need to do so, as I am self-publishing a book. So, I'm learning about book design, layout, margins, the history of the book, and all sorts of other interesting aspects of the process (yes, I'm a geek, and yes, this is fun!).

Here is my request: I need a font for the main text of the book. I want a serif font, with a bit of an "antique" feel to it (no irregularities, just an "older style" font). I want old-style numbers, ligatures, and small caps (hence, an expert set). I want a true italic of the same font (a true bold wouldn't hurt, either). I'm not sure of the exact point size yet, but it will be in the 10-11 points range.

If I had the money, I'd get Adobe Garamond and be done with it, but my wallet currently echoes if I yell too loudly. If I can't find what I want in the next couple of months or less, I'll save up and buy that, as I really enjoy that typeface. That should give you an idea of what I'm looking for, as well.

Any help would be appreciated. If you know of a cheaper font than Adobe Garamond, that would be great to know. Please excuse any mis-statements and my lack of typographical knowledge; I'm new to this, but I'm learning! :-)

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a favorite site to purchase fonts from? I'll be buying some new fonts in the future...any deals on multiple fonts or packages, etc.?

thanks,

Any Fontlab users out there?

I have access to Fontlab, and need to modify the Eurostile Bold font in the following way:

I need to create a Bolder version that can be placed behind the original font, to create the illusion of an outline around the original font. I also need it to kern the same as the original font so all characters in a sentence will look consistent.

This is to be used as dynamic text in Flash, so unfortunately its not like I can just create a new stroked version of the original font, as art, and use it.

I've spent a great deal of time playing with the various transform characteristics and outline settings and am pretty much in hell. Has anyone in this tribe done this before? Care to share some advice?

Thanks in advance.

"Man is a being of distances, a restless energy, whose poles are the futurity of her project, the freedom of the instant, the world, and other persons." __Martin Heidegger

http://www.splace.net/ScrollViews/

This 9' scroll was type-set in wood and lead type, and then letterpressed on stark white Japanese cotton paper in 1994 as a limited edition of 14 scrolls. The format cellebrated the recent discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls near the border of Jordan and Israel, but it also has the spirit and innertia of an ambitious project such as was Jack Kerouack's own endless piece of paper on which he typewrote his classic novel "On The Road".

Scrolls have always been a source of intreague as a format and as the perfect metaphor for chronology or linear narrativity. By way of influences from the 1960's minimalist and experimental music realms, artists such as: Steve Reich, Meredith Munk, John Cage, et.al., the piece also references a pianola scroll with its seemingly random yet programatic array of punched holes, only this is type.

'i' scroll unravels with an acrobatic arrangement of words an letters, the prior commenting on the acts of 'creating' and 'existing' in-the-world, the former mimic the gutural sounds of Meredith Munk's noise works and are arranged as a random system, a tip-of-the-hat to John Cage's 'chance' compositions--having been set with all the available lead type of a font's drawer, a commentary on the finite character of 'old-school' typeseting in the wake of the recent integration of the computer as a more dynamic typesetting tool, where actual letters can be typed at infinitum. The chance availability of the lead type dictated the composition.

The horizontal thrust of the piece evokes the chronologic notion implicit in Heidegger's quote, which runs as a single line along the distance of the scroll (life/existance), the quote is set in Bouer Bodoni type *(Lead), in contrast with the rest of the piece's compositional elements (words), which are set in a variety of styles from the original Grothesque family (lead and wood type).

The word 'Man' is the very first word in the long composition and one of the only two elements to be printed in red ink. The other red element is one letter 'i' which is at the other 'end' of the scroll, alone, and laying on it's side. The color connection closes the connotation that 'i' is the 'ego' of 'Man'.

The rest of the composition aludes to a 'trajectory' full of quetions and dilemas possed at contrapunctual relations to the creative 'acts' or 'stages' ('instants') in every one of the composition segments.

*Bodoni is a modernist conversion of the classic serif fonts, characterized by its square serif endings and sweeping parallel lines. These Grothesque font families are emblematic of the origins of the more simplified, modernist sans-serif typestyles.

i just got a new fontfont catalog, so i've been going a little crazy with it the last few days. and i've been thinking that i've been using Scala and Scala Sans pretty much exclusively for about three years now and that it's time to retire, especially since i've started to see it -- abused, of course -- in direct mail coupons and the like...

so, i really need another cool sans serif to play with. preferably comparable to Scala -- a full family set at least. i know The Sans is pretty popular right now, but i don't really care for it... too heavy.

my other current faves --

serif fonts:
Paperback (house)
Mrs. Eaves (emigre)
Clifford (fontfont)

display/script fonts:
Dalliance (emigre)

i'm also digging Arnhem by Our Type, Zanzibar by Fountain, and FindReplace by Process Type Foundry, but that's only after viewing them on screen; i'm reserving judgement until i see them used...

so, what are your favorites?

Embed bit?

I created a font for a client using Fontographer 4.1 - but when I try to embed it in a PDF document, it tells me that the licensing bit that allows embedding has not been set.

Is there some new-fangled program out there that I need? Or did I miss a setting in Fontographer that'll let me do that?

HI!
I am making a brochure and poster that includes Persian/Dari text. Does anyone know of a program/plug-in I can use so that I can type Persian in applications like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator?
I found some for Arabic, but Arabic doesn't have all the same letters as Persian. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!!
Thanks!

Font Murder - a rant

I work primarily in the electrical sign industry. Outdoor signs are the most important marketing tool for any business with a store front. Yet the sign industry seems to be regarded as the red-headed stepchild for the rest of the advertising industry. Some very talented graphic artists, illustrators, mural painters, etc. make their living in this business. But I would say those with talent (as well as formal training) rank in the small minority of sign makers. Many others in this business are perpetrators of what I call "font murder."

Anyone who loves type has certainly seen and recognized examples of font murder on lighted street signs, billboards, building signs, banners and more. Those in the know may shrug and think, "who ever designed that sign didn't know what he was doing." Or the badly designed display may spark some anger and disgust. My reactions lately have fallen to that second, more harsh reaction.

Some examples of Font Murder? Here ya go.

1. Arial Bold all distorted to hell.
I'm not a big fan of Arial in the first place. Give me Helvetica or Akzidenz Grotesk any day. Arial gets especially disgusting when the sign designer schlep squeezes or stretches the lettering to make it fit in a given space. To make matters worse, there is often other lines of copy stretched or squeezed to different extremes. There is no excuse for this behavior. Any sign shop will have software like Flexi, Gerber Omega, SignLab and the miscellaneous copy of CorelDRAW. It is not like they lack any fonts in their collection. Such idiots are just too lazy to scroll down a little in the font menu to pick something like Compacta, Impact, Helvetica Extra Compressed or something extended like Microgramma Bold.

2. Oddball Font Combinations
This is one critical area where the sign guy needs some level of "design sense." I've seen some wierd font combinations. Try Brush Script, Serpentine Bold (badly spaced) and Arial Black stretched out to there. Or how about Bremen Black and Times New Roman? That goes together about as well as chocolate ice cream and barbeque sauce.

3. Setting Scripts in All Caps
This rule would seem obvious to almost anybody, except for someone with no design experience who is turned loose with a vinyl cutter. I might be able to forgive this if it were just a cheapie business card with Commercial Script set in all caps. But it is downright horrible if it is going to be placed on a lighted sign that will stand next to the street for 10 years. Gaahh!

More observations of disasters in sign design to come.

Hi,
I have been using the font Wendy Medium for a job and it seems that the printer font is corrupted. I am on a Mac. Weirdly, even the screen font for the Wendy bokd is screwed up. I would prefer not to have to ask my client to buy the font, as he's a terrible cheapskate, and I am already squeezing as muc out of him as possible (which isn'tmuch, believe me.) Is it very very naughty on here to ask someone for help with I font I already own?

Thanks.

HELP I NEED A FONT!

I'm looking to match a font that a previous designer had used on a business card. Doing some work for a friend and he can't seem to find any info on the fonts fronm the original designer.

The font I'm looking for has a Latino or Spanish flare to it.

There is a picture of the business card in my profile, it says "Tabu" on it.

I need to find a font like this ASAP!

Thanks in advance!-

Can anyone tell me what are the fonts used in Martha Stewart Living, in recent issues, as serif body copy and sans-serif? I know I can go to What the Font but I thought you might be able to give me a more direct answer. Plus, I am new here and wanted to test the waters.

I know it may not be the style for everyone here, but my client likes it....and the serif'd body copy font is one of the typewriter fonts, but I'm not sure which...
Thanks.

Does anyone out there know about this typeface? If so, what's the feeling, personality and common use of this font? Please, also let me know anything else you know about it.

I am contemplating the idea of using this typeface along with an illustration of a guy fishing. I am currently using Adobe Jenson MM typeface for this illustration but I got a feed back from someone I respect that Adobe Jenson is kind of feminine and it may not go well along with a sport such as fishing -which is mostly a manly sport.

Please, help. Thank you.

What typeface

will be more effective to use in a 15 X 20 poster? The typeface is dark mustard and is on a black background. I want the typeface to be readable from far away but I don't want to be very distracting. The poster has an illustration that should be the focal point. Any sugestion will be appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

hi.

what are your favorite new-(ish) typefaces?... or rediscoveries?

i've spent the past few years in this early modern classicism phase, but it was mostly a response to the overuse of trendy (and often not fully-realized) tyographic trends of the 1990s...

but the 90s are way over. and classicism is feeling too safe.

is there anything you've discovered that you can't wait to find a use for? do tell.

Trajan and Movie Titles

Do you think Trajan is used a little too often in movie title design? I do. These days, it seems like the movie studio marketing departments have the motto, "when in doubt, use Trajan." One can visit any multiplex and almost be guaranteed to see Trajan in use for the titling on at least a couple or more movie posters. The font is used so much I'm surprised Wagner Zip Change and Gemini have not moved to offer Trajan for changeable movie marquee lettering.

I uploaded a colorful (if not a bit garish) JPEG image into the Typography Tribe album. The image shows a lot of movie titles given the Trajan treatment in recent years. It is a collage I threw together a couple years ago for discussion on a movie tech-head forum at www.film-tech.com.

Now, please don't assume from this post that I hate Trajan. Actually my feelings are quite the opposite. I like the typeface. Carol Twombly did a great job approximating the inscription of the Trajan Column (erected nearly 2000 years ago by the Roman emperor Trajan) when creating the Adobe Postscript Type 1 typeface. There is also a more curvy Goudy Trajan available, but I hardly ever see that used.

My concern about the argued overuse of Trajan is that the overuse will literally kill its popularity. Over the years I have gotten sick of other fonts I used to love because of inappropriate use or sheer overuse. Bodega Sans is one font that fits in this category. I really used to love that font. But it seems to pop up everywhere that horizontal space is limited. Trajan just seems to get used constantly whenever lettering needs to seem "important." There's lots and lots of other typefaces that evoke the same feeling.

I'm in love with this font from Frank Heine

http://www.emigre.com/EFoITrbS.php

chunkalicious, but so gorgeous ... the generally fat characters hold up really well on-screen... and an exhaustive set of ligatures.

I used it as body text recently in this piece
http://www.rickmu.com/abs/fin/

and can't wait to use it again!

Also... I recently found 'Vectora'. Basically Franklin Gothic as redrawn by Adrian Frutiger. Awesome.

I have two fonts currently going. The newer is a modern intended, ultimately, for mathematics. Another is a historically accurate revival of Guillaume Le Be's roman from 400 years ago - it's very much in the style of Garamond, but crisper.
