Re: best book on typography
Fri, December 17, 2004 - 7:16 PMI would recommend "The Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst as a great place to start.

Re: best book on typography
Fri, December 17, 2004 - 7:39 PMIf you are into lettering and logo design, the new book "The Logo Font and Lettering Bible" by Leslie Cabarga is a great buy. Cabarga is one of my favorite type designers. He's designed a number of Font Bureau faces, like Magneto, Rocket and Kobalt Kartoon. You can order the book from his website for $30 (which includes free shipping in the U.S.). Amazon sells it for a few bucks less, but you won't get it signed by Leslie. Great book at any rate. He has a few other books on lettering and design as well.

Re: best book on typography
Wed, April 27, 2005 - 11:31 PM<what is a practical book(s) for learning basic to advanced typography?>
Jennifer,
"Stop Stealing Sheep and Find Out How Type Works" by Erik Spiekerman and E.M. Ginger
"Typography: An Encyclopedic Survey of Type Design and Techniques Throughout History" by Friedrich Friedl
"Designing With Type: A Basic Course in Typography" (Fourth Edition) by James Craig
I'm just finishing up a course in typography at Parsons School of Design here in NYC. All the books listed above are great sources of information. "Stop Stealing Sheep" is a really easy read, and quite amusing in parts...makes learning fun. "Designing With Type" is a great book for learning the basics...very straightforward text. "Typography: An Encyclopedic Survey..." is a wonderful book. It's kinda big, weighs eight pounds, but it is SO worth getting. Lots and lots of information...I don't think you'll regret buying it if you do.
OMG...I just realized I've spoken to you before! How have you been?! Sorry I haven't been around in so long. I've got a lot going on lately...hopefully things will calm down a bit in the next couple weeks. Message me when you can and let me know what''s new with you. Hopefully the books I've listed here will help you out.
Take care, and hope to speak again soon!

Re: best book on typography
Sun, September 3, 2006 - 7:25 PMI ordered "Elements of Typographic Style" and it is a bit too dense, proper and lengthy for me.
I am going to check out some of the other suggestions. "Stop Stealing Sheep" looks good.
